A deck generally comprises of 52 cards, with jokers being additions to it. This card is held special as you cannot find any markings like spades, hearts, diamonds or clubs. Two jokers can be found in any traditional deck. But many are not aware of its functions. In several games, it is used as a wild card. The truth is that the joker does play an important role given any card system.

The joker card’s origin

This card first appeared in 1860 and is known to have originated from ‘euchre’ an old game. Euchre players included a new card to the game by altering its rules. They wanted to have a high value card in the game. This gave birth to the joker card that also gained popularity in the gambling world. U.S. manufacturers printed decks with joker in it. Hence, experts consider the U.S to be the card’s founder. Some even claim that this card is basically a combination of two cards, namely, the empty card and jack of clubs.

Right from its inception, the joker card is known to have undergone several transformations. The first one was named the ‘Best Bower’. Later, it got a modern version, namely, the ‘Joker’. Previously, it was referred to as the ‘jolly joker’.

Its visual representation

Besides the concept, even the joker’s visual overview is known to have quite mystifying. The joker’s appearance during the initial days was quite different. Joker cards were created based on the particular joker brand images. Some elements or a brand logo got added, thereby defining business operations, plants, buildings, etc. A few basic traits can still be noticed on this card, although it has witnessed continuous evolution.

The joker card has a man in clown costume holding several interesting tools. Generally, he wears a fool cap having bells hanging on its sides. In most cards, he uses colorful costumes while in some wearing plain black & white dress. A few decks have the joker wearing different colors like black & red. The dress worn is either till his waist or of full length. Moreover, he portrays different face expressions like evil, gloomy, laughing and smiling. The index for Joker cards is the letter ‘J’ that can be found at the corner.

There are several games that do require players to use joker cards. It does share varied usages. Being cross-functional, it is known to play different interesting roles in games like poker, euchre, chase the joker, canasta, go fish, etc.
